Western Union vs Remitly from the UAE (2026)
The legacy branch giant vs the fintech app — how Western Union and Remitly compare for UAE outbound transfers.
Western Union and Remitly are the two names that come up in almost every 'how do I send money home from the UAE' conversation. They serve overlapping needs — cash pickup, bank deposit, mobile wallets — but they come from opposite ends of the industry. This page is not about which one is 'better'. It's about which one wins on your specific transfer today.
The core difference
Western Union is the oldest large-scale remittance company in the world. Its distinctive feature is the physical agent network — hundreds of thousands of locations across every country your family is likely to be in. If someone needs cash in a small town where there is no bank and no fintech, WU is very often the only option.
Remitly is a US-headquartered fintech built in the era of mobile phones. It has no branches; every transfer happens inside the app. It leans hard on Express/Economy pricing and on modern delivery methods like GCash, Maya and home delivery in the Philippines.
Delivery methods side by side
For the three biggest UAE corridors:
- Philippines: WU offers cash pickup, bank deposit and GCash. Remitly offers bank deposit, cash pickup, GCash, Maya and home delivery.
- India: WU offers cash pickup and bank deposit. Remitly offers bank deposit, UPI and cash pickup.
- Pakistan: WU offers cash pickup and bank deposit. Remitly offers bank deposit and cash pickup.
WU's edge is the depth of the cash-pickup network. Remitly's edge is the modern mobile-wallet menu.
Rate transparency
Both show you the exact fee and the exchange rate on the review screen before you confirm. That said, the way they think about pricing is slightly different:
- Remitly separates Express (faster + costlier) from Economy (slower + cheaper). You explicitly choose which speed you want.
- Western Union quotes a single fee based on the delivery method and destination. Faster payout options may cost more, but they're not framed as a two-lane choice.
Speed
For the same corridor and delivery method, both are competitive:
- Cash pickup: minutes for both, once the transfer is paid.
- Bank deposit: WU delivers to some banks in minutes; Remitly Express does the same. Economy on Remitly is 3-5 business days.
- GCash / Maya / UPI: minutes on both.
When Western Union wins
- You want to walk into a UAE branch and pay in cash from your salary. WU has hundreds of UAE agent locations.
- Your recipient has no bank account and lives in a small town where WU has an agent but Remitly does not.
- The recipient prefers cash and doesn't want to install a bank or wallet app.
- You're not comfortable with digital-only apps.
When Remitly wins
- You send from your phone at midnight and never want to visit a branch.
- Your recipient uses GCash, Maya, home delivery or a partner like Cebuana Lhuillier / M.Lhuillier that Remitly integrates with.
- You can wait 3-5 days for Economy and want the better rate that comes with it.
- You want a transparent, side-by-side Express-vs-Economy price choice on every transfer.
New-customer promos: read the small print
Both providers run first-transfer promotions. Remitly's current UAE → Philippines welcome offer (as of 24 Sep 2026) gives new customers 1 AED = 17.16 PHP on the first AED 4,000 and no fee on the first transfer. Western Union runs zero-fee windows on specific corridors on specific days.
Neither of these is the price you'll pay long-term. Compare the standard second-transfer rate on both apps before you decide which one becomes your regular provider.
Habit: install both
The most useful workflow for a regular UAE remitter is to install both apps. Every time you're about to send, enter your exact AED amount in both, look at the recipient number, and use whichever is bigger. This costs you two minutes per transfer and saves substantially more than any 'which one is best' verdict.
Bottom line
Western Union and Remitly are both good, both licensed, both safe. WU is the branch network you can walk into with cash; Remitly is the app you use from bed. In 2026, most UAE senders don't need to pick one — they use both, on different days, depending on how the recipient wants to collect.

FAQ
Which one is faster?
For cash pickup, both are effectively minute-level once the transfer is paid. For bank deposit, Remitly Express is often faster; WU also offers minute-level to some bank accounts. For same-hour cash-in-hand on unusual corridors, Western Union's branch network is unmatched.
Which is cheaper?
Neither wins on every corridor. On UAE → Philippines with GCash delivery, Remitly is usually cheaper. On UAE → very small towns in India or Pakistan where the recipient will walk into a WU agent, Western Union sometimes wins because it doesn't have to route through a competitor's network.
Can I send without a smartphone?
Only Western Union. Every emirate has WU branches where you can walk in with your Emirates ID and cash, get a MTCN (a 10-digit tracking number), and share it with the recipient. Remitly is fully app-based.
Does the recipient need a bank account?
Not for either. WU is world-famous for cash pickup at agent locations. Remitly also supports cash pickup, particularly in the Philippines (Cebuana Lhuillier, M.Lhuillier) and Pakistan.
