Using the Wise Card in the UAE: Fees & Tips (2026)
How a Wise card issued abroad behaves in the UAE — AED payments, ATMs, weekend markup, and fair-usage limits.
This page is for a specific person: someone who already has a Wise card, issued in Europe or the UK, and is spending time in the UAE — as a resident, a visitor, or a business traveller. The Wise card itself is not (yet) issued in AED; the UAE consumer product doesn't include it. But your existing card works, and it works well, if you know a couple of habits.
Who this applies to
If you have a Wise card issued elsewhere (GBP, EUR, USD, and a few others), your card lives inside your Wise account and lets you spend from any currency balance you hold. In the UAE you'll use it exactly like any Visa/Mastercard, with two important quirks about FX and ATM fees.
Paying in AED (contactless, chip + PIN)
Almost every UAE merchant takes Visa or Mastercard. Contactless works in supermarkets, malls, taxis, restaurants — anywhere with a terminal from the last five years. Larger transactions (typically above AED 500) may fall back to chip + PIN. Your Wise PIN is the same one you set when you activated the card in your home country.
The single most expensive mistake
Some terminals — hotels, tourist restaurants, some taxis — ask you at the point of sale: 'Pay in AED or EUR/GBP/USD?'. Always pick AED.
If you pick your home currency, the terminal converts AED into it at its own rate. That rate (called Dynamic Currency Conversion, DCC) is almost always worse than what Wise would give you. You are letting the merchant's terminal steal a few percent of every transaction. The same rule applies at every ATM. Always AED. Always.
ATMs in the UAE
Most UAE ATMs accept international cards without a fuss. Emirates NBD, ADCB, FAB, Mashreq and RAKBANK all take Visa/Mastercard from abroad. Costs come from two places:
- Wise's own ATM policy. Each Wise plan has a monthly free withdrawal allowance. Above that, Wise charges a small percentage. Check the current allowance inside the Wise app under Card → Limits.
- The UAE ATM operator's fee. Some banks add AED 8-20 per foreign-card withdrawal. This is disclosed on-screen before you confirm — read the fee screen every time.
Small strategy: instead of ten small withdrawals, take one bigger amount inside your monthly free allowance.
Weekend FX and how much it actually costs
Wise's card FX is the mid-market rate on weekdays. On weekends, currency markets are effectively closed, and Wise adds a small percentage (typically <1%) to account for the movement between Friday close and Monday open. If you know you're going to spend a lot on Saturday, converting to AED inside your Wise balance on Friday before markets close avoids that markup on your card spend.
Fair-usage limits per plan
Every Wise plan has a free monthly allowance for card FX and ATM withdrawals. What was free on your last trip may not be free today if Wise has adjusted the plans in your country. Two minutes inside the Wise app before you land — Card → Fees & limits — will save you a lot more than any small subscription upgrade.
What still won't work
- You cannot receive an AED salary into your existing Wise account. There is no AED IBAN today.
- You cannot make local UAE bank transfers from Wise — Wise sends internationally, not within the UAE.
- You cannot deposit AED cash into Wise from a UAE branch. Everything is card-based or foreign-bank-based on the funding side.
Two situations to think through
Rent or big purchase in AED: paying by card is convenient, but on very large amounts the accumulation of small markups adds up. For AED 5,000+ in one transaction, get an AED quote from your bank or exchange house first and compare it to what your Wise card would give you (visible in the app in a couple of taps).
Multi-week stay: keep your home-currency balance topped up in Wise, and convert to a small AED cushion inside the app on a weekday when you know you'll be spending. That way your card spend runs off the AED balance directly, no per-transaction FX at all.
Bottom line
Your Wise card is one of the cheapest cards you can carry in the UAE, if you follow two habits: pick AED at every terminal, and keep an eye on your monthly free-ATM allowance. Wise doesn't yet issue an AED card locally, and it doesn't try to be your UAE bank account — but for a visitor or a resident with international income, it is a very sharp tool for spending inside the country.

FAQ
Does Wise issue a card in AED?
Not today. Wise's card is issued in specific currencies (GBP, EUR, USD and a few others depending on where you signed up). You can still use it in the UAE at any Visa or Mastercard merchant.
Should I choose AED or my home currency at the terminal?
Always choose AED. Choosing your home currency (dynamic currency conversion, DCC) gives you a rate set by the merchant's terminal, which is almost always worse than Wise's own conversion rate.
How much do UAE ATMs cost with a Wise card?
Two possible costs. First, Wise's own ATM policy: each plan has a monthly free allowance for withdrawals; above that Wise adds a small fee. Second, the UAE ATM operator may charge its own AED fee (usually shown on-screen before you confirm — always read it).
Will my Wise card get frozen if I use it in the UAE?
Not for a normal trip. Wise expects card use across countries and does not require travel notifications. If a transaction looks unusual it may prompt a verification inside the app; that's normal fraud protection, not a country ban.
Rates and fees change daily. Always check the final amount in the provider's app before sending. Last updated: 2026-09-24.
